1. Failed IT projects

Projects fail all the time. Let it be in the tech industry or in the personal life, for any project there is space for success, but there is also space for failure.
And it is not just start-ups or novice companies that fail, big companies also fail, losing investments, precious time and resource.

So let's have a look at three examples of failures in the tech world and see what they tried to achieve and what might be behind their failure.

Zune

What is Zune?
Zune was a portable music player produced by Microsoft. The first version of Zune has been launched in 2006 and since then several improved versions have been released with Zune HD in 2009. Product line has been discontinued in 2012.

Why did they fail?
Reading through the articles it appears that Zune player was a good product, with a sleek design and a quality technology behind.

No matter the design or technology, however, Zune has never took off and the cumulative reason appears to be, that Zune was too late for the party. Zune has been released during the boom of the media players, but most importantly Apple's iPod by then was already dominating the market.
Zune was trying to knock-off the iPod and was marketing to the same customer as Apple. But even with the overall good quality, device still lacked some features, for example lack of app support, confusing software device and incompatibility with Mac computers. Additionally it has never been perceived as a good device by the target customer.

Possibly, if Zune would have been released a few years before, with a different target customer in mind, the story might have been different. But... it never had time to take its place on the market, and as time passed, smartphones have taken over media players, and with constantly improving battery life and services like Spotify, there is no longer space for a separate music device in our pockets.

Google Wave

What is Google Wave?
Google Wave was a collaboration service provided by Google. With the Google Wave service you could work on documents in collaboration, edit documents simultaneously and chat with collaborators. Google Wave was launched in 2009, development has been stopped in 2010 and service completely shut down in 2011.

Why did they fail?
It is disappointing when expectation does not meet the reality, and this is exactly what happened with Google Wave.
Prior to launch some very bold claims had been made by Google, promising complete revolution in collaborative work and even promising to replace email forever.
With such claims, no surprise that customer expected something huge, but Google never managed to provide the reality for meeting these expectations.
While Google Wave was an interesting and new model for collaboration and co-working, it has been underdeveloped when released, by the user's opinions. It had several issues like slow performance in some browsers, missing features, like notifications, ability to remove participants from the wave, invite-only access (for the first 9 months), mediocre UI and other issues.
On top of all that the product has not been initially explained well enough to the customer.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7

What is Samsung Galaxy Note 7?
Samsung itself needs no introduction, and with amount of publicity and jokes around Galaxy Note 7, it might need no introduction either.
Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone has been released in 2016 and suspended just two months after the release with a world wide recall.

Why did they fail?
Upon release of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, it has been a success, device being complemented for its quality and design. However as soon as customers started acquiring the device, Note 7 fault has been discovered - phones were overheating and catching fire, causing dangerous situations and personal injuries. Samsung have made 2 world wide recalls, discontinuing the product by the end as well as performed numerous investigations on the issue. Company has lost more than 5 billion dollars and customer's trust.

Wrap-up

These were just a few examples, every month hundreds of projects and digital startups fail. Project managers get fired and young visionaries witness their dream being destroyed. While many entrepreneurs do not accept being labelled as fail and claim that their idea was ahead of time, many others stay on a humble side and learn from their mistakes.
